Secretary’s Message – 2018: From Strength to Strength

It’s been an incredible year for our Union.  On every front, 2018 has seen the NUW NSW get back to the basics.

With strong union governance in place, our finances are in good shape, allowing us to concentrate on the main game of fighting for the wages and working conditions of our members in their workplaces.

That focus has led to some excellent enterprise bargaining wins for workers in dozens of workplaces including Manassen Foods, Lion Dairy and Dairy and Parlamat Foods.

At DB Schenker we successfully converted 100 casual workers into permanent positions and at Arnotts, we fought and won for our members who had been unfairly dismissed.

NUW members at Sydney’s National Day of Action earlier this year.

But what I’m most proud of however, is that while our Union has been winning in the workplace, our members have been stepping into the broader debates that will define our nation over the coming years.

The May Day and the Change the Rules rallies saw the biggest turnout of NUW NSW members marching on Sydney’s streets in our entire history. Building an active network of delegates and members is important because it shows members understand that industrial and political power go hand in hand.

The intensity will only increase in 2019. In March the NSW State Election will be held, with a Federal Election also scheduled before May. The outcomes of these ballots will shape the future of our country and direction of our lives at work.

I cannot emphasise how important Labor victory in these two elections is to NUW members.  The NSW result will decide the future of a viable TAFE system, fighting wage theft and protecting the right for unions to take political action. The federal election will determine the future of penalty rates for 700,000 workers, the level of regulation for labour hire firms and, critically, the way the bargaining system will operate into the future.

Nothing the NUW has achieved this year would have been possible without the dedication of you, the members and delegates.   Once again, thank you for your hard work and support. I and all the NUW NSW officials are eternally grateful.

I wish you and your family and very Merry Christmas and a wonderful break.

I look forward to working with you all in the New Year.

Yours in solidarity

Martin Cartwright

NUW NSW Secretary
